\n
\n

Hey hey Reader!

\n

Random thought and question cuz I'm having lots of wisdomisms lately, and I'm not used to having this many wise thoughts in my head, so I figured I'd email you to dump one of em. πŸ˜†

\n

What would you do if you woke up and had $10,000 you totally weren't expecting in your bank account?

\n

Finally pay off the student loan from that puppet arts degree you got in 1992? (it was supposed to really take off)

\n

Book that trip to The Motherland you've been telling yourself you were gonna take for years?

\n

Convert it to 0.23768404 Bitcoin?

\n

Get a BBL?

\n

Me, I'd invest in a coach. Because coaches are awesome, because they help you make more money.

\n

I mean, it might not be as fun as a 95% complete Beanie Baby collection, but I can buy that after I see my increased profits, right?

\n

Honestly, I think about stuff like this all the time, especially before I started making online coursesβ€”because it felt completely BS back then.

\n

Look, the idea of money appearing randomly in your account feels foreign. I know that. It just doesn't happenβ€”especially when you're working a 9-5, and your current income is set in stone.

\n

But it absolutely, positively happens.

\n

How?

\n

Passive income. πŸ™ƒ

\n

Okay, now forget about the fantasy part of it for a sec.

\n

Forget that you have this income from your job that won't be changing until your next annual review or bonus.

\n

That's active income.

\n

You had to trade your hours for dollars, like a sad human.

\n

And while you were working, you couldn't do anything else.

\n

But today, someone made $10,000 or more in course salesβ€”without having to do that dance, and while they weren't even present at their computer.

\n

It wasn't you, and it wasn't me πŸ˜… but it was somebody!

\n

Probably Amy Porterfield, definitely Grant Cardone and all dem folks. They're the real crazy-rich ones making money with their knowledge.

\n

But here's the thing:

\n

The people making this kind of money aren't busting their asses doing it.

\n

Maybe they traded *one* hour for a workshop or webinar that got people riled up with credit cards in hand.

\n

Yeah, they worked hard up front to build the system, like you'd do with anything.

\n

But even that was just computer work.

\n

No scouting locations, managing inventory, hiring full-time employees out the gate, paying property taxes...

\n

None of it.

\n

And because of their hard work, combined with the low, low startup costs, they're making the majority of their incomes passively.

\n

I've looked up a lot of ways to make money over the years.

\n

Passive income is the only way within your control that you could potentially wake up to $10,000 that you didn't have to put in direct, active time for to earn.

\n

Randomly, even! People don't need to have you around to buy.

\n

So, curious about this wild endeavor, where you create a product that changes the world for the better and it can earn you as much money as you like without having to be present?

\n

Ready to roll up on The Motherland with your new BBL you paid for with Bitcoin? (the student loans can come later)

\n

Show up to my workshop this coming Sunday, December 17th at 7:00 PM EST, Build Your 24/7/365 Passive Income Machine with Online Courses! πŸ˜€

\n
\n

We're gonna walk you through the first steps of building your new passive income-based business, by choosing your course topic.

\n

Then, I'm going to show you the kind of money we're talking about here. πŸ’° You're going to see yourself and your self-worth sooooo differently and I'm psyched for you! πŸ˜€

\n

There WILL be a replay video sent via email after the event!

\n

But I highly recommend you actually join us, so you can get the most out of the interactive components of the workshop... plus I'll be giving away some valuable stuff. πŸ‘€

\n

You're already registered, so you don't need to do anything else. But be sure to add it to your calendar! ⬇️

\n
\n\n

happy thursday devfriend!

\n

I missed you so much!!! I truly hope you're having a great week so far, and good things are happening for you. πŸ’•

\n

Since it's been a while, you maaaaay have forgotten who I even am. I'm Nicole, creator of La Vie en Code, a resource blog/podcast/membership community for self-taught web developers!

\n
\"\"
\n
Deerfield Beach, FL 🌴
\n

You may also know me as tech's oddball programmatic problem solving savant, and/or my presence on Twitter as @lavie_encode. 😁

\n

Generally speaking, I've been doing well! I moved down to South Floridaβ€”the \"Gunshine State\", ughβ€”at the start of the year, because it's beautiful here, I was tired of Massachusetts, and my partner (whom I met through Zoom during the pandemic!) is from Broward County.

\n

But, mannnnn... my mental health has skyrocketed as a result of the physical environment change.

\n

I've been spending almost every day by or on the beach. Yes, the people here are off their freakin' rockers and despite being pretty quiet and kept to myself... but maybe the chaos junkie inside me likes it a little? πŸ‘€πŸ˜‚

\n

Anyway, when you last heard from me back in October 2021 (yeesh), you were getting some announcements from me about the launch event for my amazing, unique new membership community for self-taught coders, LaunchPad. β¬… click for more info!

\n

Well, I had the launch event, and... nobody signed up. πŸ₯²

\n

I was a little discouraged because it was so much work to put together, it was such a major passion project of mine, and my heart was truly in it. πŸ˜”

\n

But check this: a couple of months later, I actually ran into urgent issues that facilitated my move to FL, and it didn't slowed down until July.

\n

So, as it turned out, I probably wouldn't have been able to give you the personal attention you needed anyway. Remember: sometimes, things happen for a reason.

\n

But what even is LaunchPad?

\n

It's a fantastic (paid) membership community that I built from the ground up, to provide self-taught devs (especially new ones!) with the support, learning, and coaching that you need to succeedβ€”all in one place.

\n

My dream for LaunchPad is to help you become a better programmer and human. And this has been my personal mission since I started teaching myself to code in 2015, when I nearly gave up.

\n

I was floundering, I didn't know what direction I was supposed to go in, and I definitely didn't feel ready to apply to jobs or get hired.

\n

No amount of courses seemed to be able to help, because I insisted on going it entirely alone.

\n

I think I know why I did that now. I was afraid that having accountability and support would make me look weak.

\n

Plus, who was I going to ask anyway? Do you know a single person who provides dev coaching on a personalized basis? I definitely didn't.

\n

I was also pushing myself HARD to become a full-stack dev off the bat, because I was under the (INCORRECT AND HARMFUL) assumption that to be taken seriously as a woman in the industry, I couldn't just rest at the front-end.

\n

I was the one who made things so much harder for myself, when learning to code is already hard as hell.

\n

It took some time, but this month, I decided to renew my commitment to you. πŸ’•

\n

So, I started back learning the front-end from Step 1 on platforms like freeCodeCamp and Treehouse.

\n

My friend... if you're going through this, I (still) have nothing but respect and admiration for you. I definitely take for granted how much I know, and even knowing what I know, I *STILL* got my ass kicked on a lot of topics. 😬

\n

I'm back on the newsletter for good now, so let's talk more about LaunchPad next week. I won't fill your ears (or eyes) any more for this week.

\n

In the meantime, if you want to learn more about LaunchPad, feel free to check out the home page! And if you're interested, feel free to sign up!

\n
Learn more about LaunchPad!
\n

(One thing about signing upβ€”I'll likely be doing another launch event in September, and offering some bonuses for folks who attend.

\n

BUT, if you sign up beforehand, I'll give you any of those promos too, because that's the right thing to do, and I'm just so happy to have you as a member! I want you to get started as soon as you're ready. 😊)

\n

And one last thingβ€”I just want to say thanks for letting me back into your inbox! It really means a lot to me, because I have lots of good things to say. You mean a lot to me, and you give me a deep sense of purpose. πŸ’œ

In the meantime, here's one of my most popular episodes:

\n

In Episode 39, I talk about the \"developer mindset\" and what it means to \"think like a developer\".

\n

\"Think like a developer\" is kind of a nebulous term, so I break down some of the common traits you may see in yourself as a programmatic thinker. By being aware of those traits, you can maximize them and use them to your advantage while progressing through your career!

\n
\n

happy thursday devfriend!

\n

I hope your week is going well so far!! πŸ’•We're almost there!

\n

I'm so glad we're an hour in the future at last! I feel wonderful; even if it's cold as hell up here in Massachusetts πŸ₯Ά, the sun feels warm, and the days are longer. As a seasonal depression sufferer, this is like the lights being turned on after so long, and I'm loving it. 😊

\n

So, in last week's newsletter, I talked with you about inconsistency and how I'm (actively!!) working alongside you to work past some of the shame and guilt that can come along with being inconsistent.

\n

Well, after I sent you that email, I got like half a dozen emails from other people expressing how deeply they identified with the emotions I expressed over my own inconsistencies. πŸ₯Ί

\n

You were telling me stories about how you try to code SO MANY TIMES, just to get discouraged by some kind of bug or not understanding something.

\n

And then there's those times when you just straight-up don't feel like opening up your browser to anything other than social media.

\n

At first, that tab in another window stays open with your online course or whatever. It whispers for you to come back and take a crack at it again... but social media sounds way more appealing, and eventually, it just drowns out the whispers entirely.

\n

Then you might have to like restart your browser, and it opens up again after.

\n

You feel immense guilt and shame over closing the window altogether, but seeing it again is just a reminder that you've fallen off. You couldn't possibly go back to it now, and really don't want to.

\n

It's heartbreaking, really... there are so many totally capable people wrestling to build habits that will help us get ahead of everything you have to do. And by extension, of courseβ€”feel a hell of a lot less anxiety.

\n

Listen, I know how hard it can be to JUST GET STARTED.

\n

Plus, this shit is hard (life, not just coding). And it's only going to get easier by throwing yourself in there and opening yourself up to failure as a natural step of the process.

\n

I define consistency today as \"more often than not\". That makes it a lot easier for me to swallow, and doesn't bring up imagery of having to force myself every day. It actually allows me to build resilience against our expectations of being productive every single day.

\n

But I assure you... even today as I write this, I'm floored at how much convincing it takes for my brain to finally say \"OK, fine, let's just do it already... I'm sick of hearing this\" and do the thing.

\n

Plus, my executive function is crap due to my veritable cornucopia of neurodivergence and mental illness. Like, is there any hope for me?

\n

The answer is YES. It kinda has to be... or I'm really screwed, right?

\n

When I don't believe in myself, I'm not going to hear any of the inspiration or encouragement I receive and actually feel anything from it but even more shame.

\n

I could talk about this topic endlessly, but I at the very least want you to take away from this newsletter that you are loved, you are capable, and you are strong.

\n

Whatever you're trying to do, you have lots of people who believe in you, and know you can do itβ€”even if you don't!

\n

So, please be gentle with yourself. Remind yourself often why you are choosing the hard path. Consistency will come if you just keep showing up. You can't possibly fail as long as you succeed in just showing up when you can!

\n

I wish you a week (and another, and another) of trying the best you can, and being proud of what you are able to do by the end of the week.

\n

And then? REST. You need it, and you deserve it. Let's talk again next week when you're nice and refreshed, and feeling good about your accomplishments... no matter how minor they may seem to you. β™₯️

\n

Peace, love, and code,

\n

\nBIG changes are coming to La Vie en Code!\n

\n

I don't really do the whole \"can't let the cat out of the bag yet\" teaser stuff marketers like to do. Like, OMG just tell me already. πŸ™„

\n

Plus, if I got something good, and it's almost ready... why not tell you about it so you can get heckin AMPED like I am right now???

\n

So... I'M LAUNCHING A MEMBERSHIP COMMUNITY AND FORUMS FOR SELF-TAUGHT CODERS IN EARLY-MID APRIL!!!

\n

It's called LaunchPad and it's pretty much gonna break the internet. Move over, Clubhouse.

\n
\"\"
\n
The new La Vie en Code Membership Community!! :D
\n

Also, of course, there's a free forum-based community available for non-members! I don't want to exclude folks at all. Also, I should mention that it's for everyone, not just self-taught coders. πŸ™ƒ

\n

Why did I decide to do this? I mean, it's been a lot of work to set up, a lot of time, and I mostly had to do it myself cuz I'm broke πŸ˜‚

\n

Well, honestly, I really want to meet and support and love on you as a self-taught coder. ❀️ And I wanted to do it in a way that was really different from everyone else.

\n

I'm a member of a lot of forums... and quite frankly, they bore me to death. People don't really engage in meaningful ways that lead to real relationships. I love Twitter for that reason.

The pandemic has left us largely isolated. We're at the point where it's looked down upon to socialize with anyone outside our bubbles. I don't know about you, but I'm frustrated as hell right now that I can't be with my friends in person.

\n

I had talked about the little social experiment I had last year during the height of the pandemic, where I basically brought together total strangers in a weekly ultra-casual Zoom hangout.

\n

(I'm actually STILL doing these hangouts every Saturday night at 8 PM EST, so just reply let me know if you'd like a link! We love new faces!)

\n

I got to thinking... I'm great at bringing people together, so why not just make my own larger community to support the people I'm already supporting via Twitter and my courses/coaching??

\n

And so came the idea: create a paid membership community for new folks who want access to everything I create: my courses, special member-only groups, exclusive content, peeks behind the scenes... ALL OF IT.

\n

But I didn't just want a membership component. I wanted it to be available to everybody. A community where people can build their own groups, see what they want to see, chat with others, and have fun! And most importantly, know that there's even more should they choose to upgrade.

\n

Ooh, also: I loooove games, so I've added gamification for virtually every aspect of the community experience.

\n

Chat with some folks in a thread? You get a cool badge!

\n

Wanna move up in the ranks? Complete the steps and earn that shiny new title!

\n

For members only: wanna buy real-life stuff? Earn coins to spend in the LVEC shopβ€”you can even earn ACTUAL MONEY by participating and helping others!

\n

I have so so so many more details to give you, but this is a long enough email. So, stay tuned for more information! I'm so excited to offer a fun and casual home base to people in techβ€”myself included!

\n

Wanna know when the membership launches?

\n

IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN LAUNCHPAD MEMBERSHIP (or even just the free forums), please click below! I don't wanna spam you with details via the newsletter.

AYYYY WE'RE BACK!! πŸ’₯

Tune in for this week's NEW episode of the
La Vie en Code Podcast!

\n

This week on Episode 48, I'll introduce you to an often-overlooked technique for solidifying the programming knowledge you encounter: visualization.

\n

Visualization is a suuuuper powerful tool that can help you to practice recalling the information you learn, in the form of code syntax!

\n

It can also help you quickly identify areas of weakness or strength. Once I discovered the power of visualization, it totally changed the way I approached my code learnins.

\n

If you've been looking for a way to strengthen your code skills, this episode is definitely a must-listen!

\n

Please SUBSCRIBE to the podcast, too! It's on iTunes, Spotify, and Stitcher!

\n
\n\n

happy thursday devfriend!

\n

A little almost-Friday love for you since I've been neglecting the newsletter, haha! I hope you're out there being great and most importantly, staying safe. 😘

I'm getting outside in nature today with my partner to play for a while, because I've realized exactly how important it is for my mental health.

\n

Yeah... I have a bunch to talk about in terms of consistency because of my own (what feels like regularly-scheduled at this point) break in consistency. I think I'm going to write a blog post and probably also do a podcast episode on the topic.

\n

When you're doing anything hard and/or new, your consistency is GOING TO BREAK. It's bound to happen.

\n

Until I build really strong habits, I'm bound to drop off eventuallyβ€”and even then, keeping those habits in your daily routine until they stick is going to be an every day task. 😭

\n

Your job is to learn how to be resilient, not blame yourself, and get back up as soon as you can. It comes down to perseverance and grit.

\n

I started learning to code back in 2015, after losing my job in Customer Service. When I first started, everything was brand new and shiny and literally everything I did was a success.

\n

Then things start getting harder, and harder. The challenges get more... well, challenging.

I really was hard on myself because I thought I just wasn't good enough.

That I wasn't doing enough.

\n

Eventually, I just accepted that this cycle was going to occur, especially with Bipolar 2 Disorder and depression and anxiety and life and whatnot. The best that I can do is just to keep getting up, no matter how long it takes me. Even if it's 15 minutes a day, to move myself forward a launch.

\n

I guess you could say I'm a model of what happens when you put somewhere between 0.002% and 1.68% progress every day. πŸ˜‚

\n

There is no referee waiting to declare the fight over. The only referee has been myself, telling myself that if I couldn't get up fast enough, it wasn't worth it to get up at all. 😭

\n

As I pick my own ass up and get back to supporting you via the newsletter, podcast, and blog... I encourage you to pick up something you've been inconsistent with, as well!

Even if you get knocked down immediately, you'll figure out something new to try along the way. You'll also learn what doesn't work.

\n

And most importantly, you'll gain confidence. If I could buy confidence in a bottle, I would run them the hell out of stock. πŸ˜‚

\n

But because they don't... my only possible way forward is to put my head down, forget that I was just inconsistent, and just do my best.

\n

If you haven't been coding... go write a line or two. Anything. Just open it up and try. Give your brain that context for how it feels. That's soooo important!!

\n

If you haven't been releasing podcasts (NICOLE), just get the hell up and record anything to build the context back and just even remember what it's like to record.

\n

If you haven't reached out to your frands via newsletter in a while (NICOLE!!!), write one. Doesn't matter if it's not on Monday like I used to do every week. Just reach out and say hi.

\n

Then PRESS SEND. That's the only way I plopped back in your inbox today!

\n

Now, if you don't hear from me next week... you'll know I'm struggling to stay consistent once again. I'm going to try to make that not the case, but if it does?

\n

That's perfectly okay.

\n

I know you'll be here waiting for me when I return, buddy. As will your way forward, as soon as you come back to it. ❀️

\n

I love you and believe in you! Get it get it!

\n

Peace, love, and code,

I don't really do the whole \"can't let the cat out of the bag yet\" teaser stuff marketers like to do. Like, OMG just tell me already. πŸ™„

\n

Plus, if I got something good, and it's almost ready... why not tell you about it so you can get heckin AMPED like I am right now???

\n

So... I'M LAUNCHING A MEMBERSHIP COMMUNITY AND FORUMS FOR SELF-TAUGHT CODERS IN EARLY-MID APRIL!!!

You get a badge!

\n

Wanna move up in the ranks? Complete the steps and earn that shiny new title!

\n

For members only: wanna buy real-life stuff? Earn coins to spend in the LVEC shop!

\n

I have so so so many more details to give you, but this is a long enough email. So, stay tuned for more information! I'm so excited to offer a fun and casual home base to people in techβ€”myself included!

\n

Wanna know when the membership launches?

\n

IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN LAUNCHPAD MEMBERSHIP (or the free forums), please click below! I don't wanna spam you with details via the newsletter.

\nπŸŽ™ This week's LVEC Podcast episode: Visualize Your Code (and Practice Anywhere!)\n

\n
\"\"
\n

\n

AYYYY WE'RE BACK!! πŸ’₯

Tune in NEXT TUESDAY (March 16th) for a new episode of the
La Vie en Code Podcast!

\n

This week on Episode 48, I'll introduce you to an often-overlooked technique for solidifying the programming knowledge you encounter: visualization.

\n

Visualization is a suuuuper powerful tool that can help you to practice recalling the information you learn, in the form of code syntax! It can also help you quickly identify areas of weakness or strength. Once I discovered the power of visualization, it totally changed the way I approached my code learnins.

\n

If you've been looking for a way to strengthen your code skills, this episode is definitely a must-listen!

\n
Listen now!
\n

Please SUBSCRIBE to the podcast, too! It's on iTunes, Spotify, and Stitcher!

\n

And of course, if you like what you hear, please leave me a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review and a kind comment. I love hearing from my listeners. πŸ₯°

\n

Ok, onto the hand-picked resources, and I hope I'll get a chance to see you in the courses! β™₯️
